Artist Talk | Dominic Kavanagh, Natasha Madden and Zac St. Clair | BLINDSIDE Gallery

Dominic Kavanagh, The Beehive

Dominic Kavanagh, Natasha Madden and Zac St. Clair | BLINDSIDE Gallery Dominic Kavanagh’s The Beehive is an installation inspired by and sourced from urban ruins. It metaphorically relates the lifeless urban scrapheap to the contrastingly buzzing, complex and teeming circumstance of an archetypal beehive. More about the exhibition here. Natasha Madden and Zac St. Clair create a utopian model for comfortable living, with a mutual inertia and optimistic apathy. By using materials that are both visually and physically comforting, utilitarian objects are created and given a rest from the obligation of their designed purpose, as a physical representation of the romantic and melancholic desire for paradise that they both share. More about the exhibition here. Date: 2:30pm Saturday 19th April Venue: Nicholas Building, Level…

BLINDSIDE3

Spencer Lai and Jake Swinson | Do you want me to come downstairs, with rollers in my hair? Come and hear artist Spencer Lai and curator Jake Swinson talk about their collaboration. Date: Saturday 1st March 2:30pm Venue: BLINDSIDE Gallery, Level 7, Room 14, Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

Tuesday 13th August | Artists in Conversation: Susan Jacobs & Nicholas Mangan @ MUMA

Susan Jacobs, Hard age new edge (melted wizard) 2010. Monash University Collection

Susan Jacobs and Nicholas Mangan respond to Simon Starling: In Speculum, discussing their own research-based practices with a focus on their shared concerns and engagement with materiality, scientific enquiry, site-specificity, the studio/workshop, research, scale, technology, and sculptural process. Susan Jacobs’s art encompasses drawing, sculpture, video and sitespecific installations. Whatever the media, she has a consistent focus on the properties of materials and spaces, directed by the processes involved in drawing. Jacobs works with a diverse array of materials, referencing the invisible and often indecipherable ‘stuff’ of the world that surrounds us – atomic and sub-atomic particles, metals, physical forces and environments. She is also fascinated by ‘the latent potential of sites’ and the metaphorical possibilities inherent in them. Jacobs’s practice…

Lecture | Anne-Marie May at Holmesglen

ART TALKS: Free Public Lecture Anne-Marie May Anne-Marie May is a Melbourne based visual artist. For two decades, her practice has explored connections across the fields of art, design and architecture. May was a member of the influential Store 5, an artist-run space in Prahran. The artist and her fellow exhibitors used materials commonly associated with a non-art environment (domestic, industrial) and through process and experimentation, re-purposed and personalised them. May continues to describe her art as process driven: working with a variety of materials and experimenting with processes that could potentially impose form on to those materials. The artist veers away from adhering to a predetermined plan or concept of form followed by fabrication and her acrylic mobile, Untitled,…

Art Talks: Simon Terrill at Holmesglen Collection

Simon Terrill, Balfron Tower, 2010 © Reproduced courtesy the artist and Sutton Gallery, Melbourne

Art Talks: Simon Terrill Simon Terrill uses photography to investigate the relationship between built environments and personal narrative. Even when vacant, sites captured in his work are heavily laden with a sense of human presence and activity. The movement of crowds, wear and tear carved by constant use and intimate histories imparted by those passing through resonate in Terrill’s compositions. The artist is also known for fastidiously directed, composed and constructed crowd scenes such as the monumental Balfron Tower - a print of which is now in the Holmesglen Collection and a work that required months of meticulous organisation to realise. Liaison with an East End London council, residents and funding bodies lead to a single image in which an architectural monolith…
