News and Writing on Art and Art History | September 3rd

News and Writing on Art and Art History | September 3rd Katrina Grant News New NGV director Tony Ellwood gave a speech to the Melbourne Press Club on the 23rd August (full text in The Australian) where he outlined plans for the NGV under his leadership, some more specific than others. The continued focus on the apparent need for more and more contemporary art at the NGV strikes me as misplaced. A collection will always have its gaps (I’m sure many of us could think of a certain period we would love to see a few more examples of). They collect (it seems to me) a significant amount of…

The Warburg Institute Fellowships in Cultural and Intellectual History 2012-2013 The Warburg Institute: The Warburg Institute is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the classical tradition – in the sense of those elements in European thought, art and institutions that have evolved out of the cultures of the ancient world. Its Library and Photographic Collection are designed and arranged to encourage research into the processes by which one culture learns from another and by which different fields of thought and art act on each other. They are particularly concerned with continuities between the ancient Mediterranean civilizations and the cultural and intellectual history of post-classical Europe, especially in the period to c. 1800. The Institute offers a number of short-term Fellowships of two, three or four months. Details of those available for tenure in the academic year 2012-13 are given below.…
