Floor Talk: In Conversation - Contemporary art and India
Nick Hill will lead the discussion by introducing the Australia India Institute. This will be followed by an insightful conversation between Kate Daw, Emily Floyd, Simon Maidment, John Meade and Vikki McInnes, who will reflect on the contemporary art scene in India, following their visit last month to Delhi.
Melbourne-based contemporary artists Kate Daw, Emily Floyd and John Meade will present an exhibition of new work at Seven Art, Delhi in December as part of the art festival marking 2012: India-Australia Year of Friendship. Each of the artists have previously undertaken an Asialink residency in India (at baroda and Sanskriti Kendra). The upcoming exhibition specifically devolves from those experiences and influences, and continues to expand the various interests and engagements of each artist in India.
Nick Hill is the Director of External Affairs for the Australia India Institute. The Insitute provides leadership inpolicy, business, research and person-to-person exchange, for the benefit of India and Australia and the broader Asia Pacific region. The Insitute attracts leading international and Australian experts on India and builds on our expertise and relationships which will enhance understanding and cooperation between Australia and India on economic, political, cultural and social issues. The work of the Insitute encompasses many activites, conferences, workshops and seminars etc., but few achieve the kind of traction that arts and cultural exchange can create.
Simon Maidment is the director of Satelite Art Projects, an agency that commissions and facilitates projects outside of the gallery context. On the recent visit to Delhi, he was particularly taken with a number of performative events he witnessed.
Vikki McInnes is the director of the Margaret Lawrence Gallery at the Victorian College of the Arts and co-director of Sarah Scout, on of two Australian galleries that participated in the 2012 India Art Fair, where she was delighted with the response to Simone Slee’s work.
