An Illumination: the Rothschild Prayer Book & other works from the Kerry Stokes Collection c.1280-1685 until Sunday 15th November 2015 It is always interesting to get a glimpse of a private collection and in this small but well-curated exhibition we are able to view a selection of art from the collection of Kerry Stokes. The objects on display are mostly religious in subject and have been chosen by curator (and leading expert on illuminated manuscripts) Margaret Manion to complement the display of the Rothschild Prayer Book, which Stokes bought in 2014. A new exhibition opening at the Ian Potter Museum of this Art provides an opportunity for Melbourne audiences to see art from the Kerry Stokes Collection, including the famous Rothschild Prayer Book. The exhibition is curated by Emeritus Professor Margaret Manion and brings together paintings, stained glass, polychrome sculpture and other art dating from between 1280 and 1685. Mr Stokes has built his collection of illuminated manuscripts over the past forty years, though many of the works included in this exhibition, such as the Pieter Breughel the Younger painting Calvary (1615), are more recent acquisitions stimulated by his recent purchase of the Rothschild Prayer Book (c. 1505 – 1510 ) in early January 2014. Early Books of Hours, especially those made for women, have long been a speciality of Professor Margaret Manion, who in 1998 published a major article on the famous fourteenth-century Book of Hours of Queen Jeanne of Navarre, in the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris (ms n.a. lat. 3093). This lecture takes up her lead and it asks why and when this beautiful manuscript was made, and why it includes some very rare components and extraordinary pictures, then unparalleled in medieval art. It follows the history of this Book of Hours in directions hitherto unsuspected, tracing its descent through the possession of at least four different reigning queens, of Navarre, France and England.
