Lecture | The Smithsonian Institution’s Provenance Research Initiative - Jane Milosch

milosch_professional-photo_tempThis lecture will give an overview of the Smithsonian Institution’s Provenance Research Initiative. As a leader within the area of provenance research and theory Milosch is an unparalleled example to curators and the wider museum sector. Provenance research provides a powerful lens through which to look at and learn about art, the history of collecting, and museums. The Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative (SPRI) aims to expand its focus beyond the WWII era, to assist with current provenance issues, and to explore the implications of provenance research for art history and connoisseurship. We anchor the museum in its core missions: stewardship, education, and appreciation of all cultures.

Jane Milosch was also Fulbright Scholar in Munich, Germany, where she has studied and worked as a managing editor for Prestel Art Books and an art consultant to art museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions. Milosch began her museum career in 1990 at the Detroit Institute of the Arts in the Department of 20th-Century Art, Decorative Arts, and Design. She has also lived in Bologna, Italy, working for Johns Hopkins University-SAIS.
The worldwide scope of Milosch’s connections within significant areas of the art and craft sector includes major museums, festivals, cultural institutions, community projects and educators, makes her a touchstone for the contemporary art and craft community of Australia. Her extensive experience in publishing and writing in combination with her active willingness to engage and share with the local and Asian craft community is reflected in her recent participation as a selector for the Taiwanese Ceramics Biennale.
Her experiences at the Smithsonian Institute (as Director of the Provenance Research Initiative), her involvement with the Taiwan Ceramic Biennale, collaboration on The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Exhibition and Community Reef Project and her multifaceted curatorial and editorial projects highlight an interdisciplinary career that offers a uniquely dynamic and analogous perspective on the creative arts.
