Hidden and in plain view: considering Taryn Simon’s Index Inspired by rumours of WMDs and secret sites in Iraq, American photographer Taryn Simon decided to address secret sites in her own country. For An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar 2006, Simon photographed hidden places and things within US borders. Her subjects range across realms of science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature, security, and religion. As Australians, what do we make of Simon’s America, are we both intrigued and repelled? While this series has been described as the ‘aesthetic antithesis of photojournalism’ Simon draws upon traditions of documentary photography to create this disorienting image of contemporary America. Following her Masters research into sound in the public realm, Lauren will be discussing the act of listening, the changing spaces for quiet and the unchanging need for contemplation in the built environment. Looking at natural, urban and technospaces like the grotto, the cloister, the autobahn and the set of headphones, Lauren will unpack the nature of sound in the public realm and how we listen in contemporary cities. Anthony d’Offay is here in Melbourne in association with the forthcoming Ron Mueck exhibition (22 January – 18 April 2010, NGV) and will present on the ARTIST ROOMS project. For more than 40 years Anthony d’Offay has been one of the world’s leading art dealers and is recognized as one of Britain’s most generous philanthropists. He began dealing in contemporary art in the late 1960s and moved his ground breaking gallery into its Dering Street premises in 1969. ARTIST ROOMS is a new collection of international contemporary art which has been created through one of the largest and most imaginative gifts of art ever made to museums in Britain.
