‘Collecting the Now’ Symposium 7th – 8th March, 2018 NGV-I Clemenger Auditorium The art and design of the twenty-first century is characterised by complexity and change. Contemporary artists and designers experiment with new materials, emerging technologies and fluid conceptual frameworks that challenge normative approaches to the collection, preservation and presentation of art within collecting institutions. ‘Collecting the Now’ means collecting works that defy easy categorisation by media type or size and may invite an active and iterative engagement with the visitor that contradict traditional preservation conventions. The program for this two-day symposium will bring together an inter-disciplinary mix of conservators, installers, registrars, contract specialists, curators and artists to explore the challenges presented by the acquisition and display of contemporary art and design. This year’s 20th annual La Trobe University Art History Alumni Rae Alexander Lecture will be presented by leading art historian Dr Richard Haese. He will explore the landmark exhibition, The Field on the 50th anniversary of this remarkable showcase. The Field is regarded as a landmark exhibition in Australian art history – a radical showcase of 74 abstract and conceptual, colour field, geometric and hard edge paintings and sculptures. Influenced by the American origins of abstract art, the exhibition opened to much controversy at the NGV in 1968 with its silver foil-covered walls and geometric light fittings, boldly launching the careers of a generation of young Australian artists including Sydney Ball, Peter Booth, Janet Dawson and Robert Jacks. The NGV has announced the line-up for its inaugural triennial of contemporary art. From the NGV: Featuring the work of 60 artists and designers from 30 countries, the NGV Triennial surveys the world’s best art and design, across cultures, scales, geographies and perspectives. The inaugural NGV Triennial will open in December 2017. It will be a free exhibition and celebration of contemporary art and design practice that traverses all four levels of NGV International, as well as offering a rich array of programs. The NGV Triennial explores cutting edge technologies, architecture, animation, performance, film, painting, drawing, fashion design, tapestry and sculpture. Rae Alexander Lecture 2016 Zoffany’s Portrait of Elizabeth Farren as Hermione in Shakespeare’s ‘A Winter’s Tale’ in the NGV depicts one of the most striking scenes in all of Shakespeare’s plays, the moment when Hermione is returned to life. Vivien Gaston’s lecture will probe the work’s context in the life of the artist, the sitter and its owner and reveal the way a portrait can shape and direct the aspirations of all three. Celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary, the lecture will also show the continued impact of his plays and the nature of portraits as role-playing and performance. Faculty of Arts Dean’s Lecture | Art and Detection: Investigating Louis Duffy, a Forgotten British Painter of the Second World War – Ted Gott | University of Melbourne

In September 2006 the National Gallery of Victoria acquired at auction a remarkable painting by a virtually unknown artist: Christ Turning Out the Money Lenders, a work attributed by the auction house to a ‘Louis Duffy, 20th century’. This impressively large painting shows sixteen men dressed in c. 1940 business suits, gathered in tense confrontation in a modern-day retelling of the New Testament account of Christ expelling the money changers from the Temple. In Duffy’s composition, the Temple setting has been transmuted into a modern graveyard, and the money changers have morphed into mid-20th-century arms dealers trading munitions on the graves of the dead, the ultimate profit-and-loss indicators of their grim transactions. The subsequent arrival of Duffy’s painting in Melbourne in late 2006 sparked considerable debate about the meaning and significance of the gallery’s new acquisition. Examination of the painting’s…

The nude figure was central to the art of Edgar Degas, and yet frequently the artist’s expansive body of work in this area has been overshadowed by focus on portraits and dancers. Drawn from across the globe and with over 200 artworks, this exhibition represents one of the most internationally significant retrospectives of Degas, highlighting his influential contribution across the different mediums of painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and photography. NGV acquires Degas sculpture

At today’s preview for the new Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition – Degas: A new vision – the NGV announced that one sculpture in the exhibition will be staying in Melbourne. Degas’s ‘Dancer looking at the sole of her right foot (Second study)’ has been purchased for the NGV collection with funds donated by Leigh and Sue Clifford. Many of Degas’ sculptures were unknown during his lifetime. After the poor reception of his now-famous ‘Little Dancer’ (a cast of which is in the exhibition) in 1881 he kept much of his work in sculpture secret. He modelled in wax and is known to have remade and often destroyed works. Around 150 wax studies were found in his studio when he died in 1917 and 74 of these were salvaged and cast in bronze by the Adrien-A. Hébrard Foundry, Paris, and their Milanese master craftsman Albino Palazzolo. The NGV’s new sculpture is…
