AICCM Symposium and Workshops | Shock of the New: Modern Materials, Media and Methods | Melbourne February 2017

The AICCM Objects and Electron Special Interest Groups welcome you to register for the AICCM symposium the Shock of the New: Modern Materials, Media and Methods, to be held at the Royal Exhibition Building Theatrette in Melbourne, Australia from 8-9 February 2017. The program includes over 20 presentations from conservators and researchers around Australia and the worlds, as well as renowned invited speakers Dragan Espenschied (Rhizome, USA) and Kate Dunn (UNSW, Australia). 4A Symposium – Twenty Years | University of Sydney and Power Institute

To celebrate its twentieth birthday, on 4 November Sydney’s 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art will stage a major symposium event Twenty Years at the University of Sydney with support from the Power Institute, the Asian Australian Studies Research Network and the China Studies Centre. Twenty Years brings together those who have played a role in the development of 4A as a leader in Asian contemporary art in Australia since 1996. Discussion on the past, present and future work of 4A will be led by artists, curators and academics. On the eve of the launch of MPavilion 2016, hear three distinguished architects discuss the contemporary pavilion and its significance for audiences today. To mark of the launch of the 2016 MPavilion, the University of Melbourne is hosting a symposium that brings together leading architects, artists, curators, architectural historians, cultural historians and art historians to focus on the theme of ‘The Pavilion’, an architectural structure with an ancient lineage and continuing contemporary resonance. Experts from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds will provide different perspectives on the ‘The Pavilion’ over three sessions. The first session—held at the University’s Melbourne School of Design—will include art historians and cultural historians; the second and third sessions—held at the VCA—will include architects, architectural historians and art historians, and artists and curators respectively. The keynote speaker for the event is Lori Emerson, Associate Professor with a split appointment in the Department of English and the Intermedia Arts, Writing, and Performance Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. A symposium presented by Art & Australia at VCA |Turning on Burn: A Reflective Conversation This symposium explores and speculates upon the work and legacy of Australian conceptual artist Ian Burn (1939–1993). After graduating from the National Gallery of Art School (now the VCA School of Art), Burn spent much of his career working in the avant-garde scenes of London and New York. He was a key member of Art & Language, a collaborative group who produced the ground-breaking publication  Art–Language and included artists Roger Cutforth, Joseph Kosuth and Mel Ramsden. Returning to Australia in 1977, Burn became involved in the Art Workers Union (AWU), a political and social platform that championed artists’ rights and helped change the landscape and expectations under which artists work in Australia.
