Call for Papers | Latecomers Anita Brookner Then and Now | Melbourne – March 2017

As we approach the first anniversary of Anita Brookner’s death, this first international and interdisciplinary conference devoted to Brookner seeks to explore the meaning and significance of Brookner’s vast legacy, in both fiction and non-fiction. Presented by The University of Melbourne Venue: National Gallery of Victoria (International) The work of Anita Brookner occupies an ambiguous place in the literary field. Brookner has a cult status, was a Booker-Prize winner and best-selling novelist, and yet her work received what she herself deemed ‘censorious’ reviews and limited critical attention. Brookner’s death was accompanied by conflicted accolades that appeared to celebrate her life while restating the predictable (and vexatious) reading of her identity as a lonely, single woman. In addition to her 24 novels and one novella, Brookner authored a number of art-historical works and was a prolific reviewer of art and literature…

CFP | Conference – Enchanted Isles, Fatal Shores: Living Versailles

Friday 17 – Saturday 18 March 2021 On the occasion of the Versailles: Treasures from the Palace exhibition at the NGA, which brings major works of art from the Palace of Versailles to Canberra, this conference showcases the latest ideas about the lives of past people and objects, as well as the living culture of Versailles today. Staged in Canberra, which like Versailles is a planned capital city, centre of government and culture, this is a unique opportunity to explore the enduring influence and resonance of Versailles, its desires and self-perceptions of modernity, from film to fashion to architecture. Gathering a generation of scholars whose work is shifting our perceptions of the art, culture and life of ancien-régime Versailles and its reception, this is the occasion for fresh and challenging research, and new perspectives on canon-defining works. 1664 is formative in the…

Call for Papers | SOUTHEAST OF NOW, Issue 3/4 – Movement

SOUTHEAST OF NOW: Directions in Contemporary and Modern Art | Volume 2 (Numbers 3 and 4): Movement Website: http://southeastofnow.com/call-for-papers-volume2/ To be published March and September 2018, in print and online, by NUS Press. Deadline: Sep 1, 2016 One of the great storied spaces of our modern period can be located in the travelling of ideas, (art) objects and humans around the world. These movements are spurred on by ever dynamic and variegated social forces — they are made mobile through notions of exchange, relation, plunder, migration, exile, reconstitution, transfer, refuge, entanglement. Human interactions on such a global scale are central to the ideas, aesthetic objects, cultural production and labour of our times. These have been and continue to be informed by a displacement of culture and context. Perhaps, one needs to acknowledge their co-extensive localities, in ways that go beyond privileging the place or context of origin as authentic. Movement, in this sense, is…

Call for Papers | The Other and the Foreign: Contact, Curiosity, and Creative Exchange | 34th CIHA Congress, Beijing 2016

This session is concerned with the representation of the ‘other’ and the ‘foreign’ in art as well as with the reception of ‘other’  and ‘foreign’ art forms. It acknowledges that, in a global world, the notion of ‘othering’ is not restricted to the geographically or ethnically distant (‘foreign’),  but occurs within one’s own (geographically defined) culture between different social classes, genders, age groups, and religious affiliations.More generally, the session focuses on the phenomenon of artistic encounter and exchange. While its parameters are worldwide, papers on all topics related to the ‘other’/’foreign’ are solicited in as far as they pertain to the creation and reception of art and/or the transmission of creative ideas. Papers on the contacts between specific regions or the role and place of individual artists in the process of artistic exchange are welcomed. Questions to be addressed may include but are…
