Two new exhibitions opening today at the Monash Gallery of Art. Photography goes Poof! Mathew Jones’ lost photoworks 1989-94 3 March 2021 to 10 April 2021 Between 1989 and 1994 the Australian artist Mathew Jones made a number of photographic works about gay identity. For both political and artistic reasons, these works were ephemeral, strategic interventions. Some photographs were only circulated as photobooks or as artist’s pages in magazines. Others took the form of site-specific installations that depended on a live audience. As a consequence, these works were like Molotov cocktails of contemporary art, exploding in the face of specific problems and then evaporating into the ether. News | Finalists for the 2015 Bowness Photography Prize Announced

Two of Australia’s most notable figures have selected 47 finalists for this year’s Bowness Photography Prize. Bill Henson and Karen Quinlan were joined by MGA Senior Curator, Stephen Zagala to shortlist the record number of entries this year. Established in 2006 to promote excellence in photography, the annual non-acquisitive William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize is an initiative of the MGA Foundation.   The 2015 competition attracted 696 entrants, the largest number received in the history of the prize. Stephen Zagala, MGA Senior Curator observed, on behalf of the judges, ‘This year the judging panel looked at over 2600 images and selected a field of 47 finalists to represent the best of Australian photography today. News | Monash Gallery of Art appoints new director

The MGA has announced their new director is Kallie Blauhorn. She comes from a business and marketing background rather than a curatorial one. From MGA Mayor Paul Klisaris said the appointment of Ms Blauhorn followed an intensive search among high calibre applicants. “I’m delighted to welcome Ms Blauhorn to the Monash team and I believe her enthusiasm and drive will take our much-admired gallery to new heights,” Cr Klisaris said. “In this, the 25th year of the Monash Gallery of Art, I’m excited about the vision Ms Blauhorn has for cementing the gallery’s place as one of Australia’s most significant public places.” Ms Blauhorn has a strong background in business, marketing and fundraising development through her previous role as Senior Development Manager with…

Since that time he has become one of Australia’s most celebrated artists.
