The Robert Wilson Annual Decorative Arts Lecture

Delffse Porceleyne: Dutch Delftware of the 17th Century - Robert Aronson

Jar (17th century) from Delft, Medium earthenware, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Felton Bequest, 1939

The lecture will provide an overview of 250 years (1600-1850) history of ceramic production in the town of Delft and a focus on the second half of the seventeenth century when the small town of Delft became the centre of ceramic production in Europe, with production influenced by events from Europe to China. During this time potteries began selling to the nobility and royal courts all over Europe and their products in turn became the source of inspiration for earthenware factories all over Europe.

Robert Aronson is Director of Aronson Antiquairs, one of the leading firms for Dutch delftware of the 17th and 18th centuries. Established in Arnhem in 1881, Robert is the fifth generation of the Aronson family to run the business, now located in the antiques district of Amsterdam, close to the Rijksmuseum. An international authority on Dutch delftware, Robert has been publishing on the subject for years and lecturing to museums and specialist interest groups around the world. Robert is chairman of the Dutch Dealers Association, a member of the Executive Committee of TEFAF Maastricht and a panel member on the Dutch Antiques Road Show for European ceramics.
