The symposium is a highlight of the 2013 Centenary of Canberra program TOUCH: Sculpture and the Land that has been designed to celebrate sculpture in all its forms. TOUCH: Sculpture and the Land is taking place in venues across Canberra in May 2013 and includes special exhibitions at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery and School of Art Gallery, various activities and events at ACT Galleries and Art Centres, artists in residence, walks, talks and tours of sculpture collections on the ANU Campus and International Sculpture Park and the NGA Sculpture Garden. Opportunities to visit Canberra’s public sculpture collections in Civic, Parliament House, New Acton and the Australian War Memorial are also being arranged.

This symposium is a collaboration between the Australian National University, Research School of Humanities and the Arts, the ANU School of Art and the National Gallery of Australia.

Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May 2020

The two day symposium presents national and international perspectives as a context for discussion about sculpture in Canberra and beyond. It brings together artists, curators and art writers to discuss sculpture in its various forms – public sculpture, sculpture parks, commissioned sculpture, sculpture galleries and works in collections.

Speakers will explore issues and ideas in themes such as spectacle, commissioning, environment, space and nature, place, light, interior or memorial space.

London based consultant Vivien Lovell’s keynote address, part of the Centenary of Canberra’s Big Issues/Big Talk program, will launch the symposium.

Other presenters include artists Patricia Piccinini (Australia), Peter Kennedy (Australia), Pamille Berg (NSW), Chris Drury (UK), Wolfgang Buttress (UK), Siuli Tan ( Singapore), Maria Fernanda Cardoso (Sydney), School of Alumni Noelene Lucas (Sydney), Anne Neil (Perth), Steven Holland (ACT), Alistair Riddell and Shanti Sumartojo (ACT), National Gallery of Australia curators Deborah Hart, Lucina Ward and Mim Kelly and Artistic Director of the Canberra Centenary Robyn Archer AOM .
