Forums | Melbourne Now at NGV

In anticipation of the Melbourne Now exhibition later this year, the NGV is holding a series of free forums about the latest art, design, architecture, music and film in Melbourne .

Each Sunday in February, a range of speakers including Phip Murray, Simone LeAmon, Gideon Obarzanek, Melissa Loughman, Jon Campbell and others will explore the issues and subjects that drive our artistic community.

Collaborations:  3rd February

This discussion focuses on Melbourne artists who work collaboratively as a mode of practice, as well as those who have collaborated with designers, architects, musicians and fashion designers on one-off projects that fall outside their usual practice.

Speakers include: Tony Ellwood (Director, NGV), Phip Murray (Artist & Writer), Susan Cohn (Jewellery Designer) and Ash Keating (Artist)

Intersections: 10th February

Integrated art forms blur the boundaries between music, art, fashion and design. Join the conversation with fashion designers whose works go beyond functionality, artists who are also musicians, artists who dabble in a range of media, and on graphic design as art.

Speakers include: Fleur Watson (Curator for Design Hub, RMIT), Jon Campbell (Artist & Musician), Susan Dimasi (Fashion Designer, MaterialByProduct) & Gideon Obarzanek (founder, Chunky Move)

Reduce Reuse Reappropriate: 17th February

The trend of recycling in art & design today will be explored – literally in terms of sustainability and recycling of materials, but also conceptually with regard to recycling trends and movements, as well as genres and reappropriating them.

Speakers include: Katie Somerville (Curator, Australian Fashion & Textiles, NGV), Chaco Kato (Artist & representing Slow Art Collective) Simone LeAmon (Designer & Artist) and Penny Byrne (Artist)

Melbourne Next: 24th February

Melbourne Next will address issues of contemporary city life through the exploration of new ideas, discussion on growth of the city, changing demographics, ageing population, transport and ultimately the forward-thinking solutions for urban life. Who and what will be the drivers of Melbourne culture in the future?
