In his lecture Breaking the Chain: Thoughts on trauma and transference Jan Verwoert will discuss the dilemma of the modern artist and intellectual by asking the question: How can we be witnesses to society’s traumata without being the next victim in the chain of trauma transferred from one generation to the next?

Jan Verwoert is a critic and writer on contemporary art and cultural theory, based in Berlin. He is a contributing editor of Frieze magazine and his writing has appeared in different journals, anthologies and monographs. Verwoert is the author of Bas Jan Ader: In Search of the Miraculous (2006) and the essay collection Tell Me What You Want What You Really Really Want (2010).

Verwoert teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam, the de Appel curatorial program and the Ha’Midrasha School of Art, Tel Aviv. He plays bass and sings in La Stampa (Staatsakt/Berlin).
