Medievalism and Youth Culture

Participation in this all-day Masterclass is invited from postgraduate and early career researchers in fields related to medievalism and youth culture, such as children’s and young adult literature, fantasy literature, graphic arts, computer gaming, role-playing games, fandom, creative and re-enactment community groups, theatre, television and cinema.

The Masterclass will be led by:

• Clare Bradford, Professor of Literary Studies at Deakin University, former President of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature (2007–2011), and the first international winner of the prestigious Trudeau Fellowship (2009).
• Stephen Knight, Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus in English at Cardiff University and Honorary Professor of English at the University of Melbourne.
• Chantal Bourgault du Coudray, Assistant Professor in Communication Studies at UWA, scholar, screenwriter and occasional filmmaker.

The Masterclass will consist of:

• An overview by Professor Bradford of the cultural uses of medievalism in texts for children and young adults, with a focus on two strands of signification: monstrous identities and comedic depictions of the Middle Ages.
• An introduction by Professor Knight to ‘Make-up and Trainers: Electronic Robin Hood’.
• A discussion by Dr Bourgault du Coudray addressing the gender dynamics of medievalism, including children’s culture.
• Large- and small-group discussions, facilitated by Professors Bradford and Knight and Dr Bourgault du Coudray, in which all participants in the Masterclass will have opportunities to discuss their research projects.

Registrants for the Masterclass are invited to attend the preceding ARC Symposium‘International Medievalism and Popular Culture’ (December 4-5), which will feature new research by leading medievalists from the USA and Australia, including Louise D’Arcens (Wollongong), John Ganim (UC Riverside), Nickolas Haydock (Puerto Rico), Eileen Joy (Southern Ilinois, Edwardsville, editor of postmedieval) and Stephanie Trigg (Melbourne).

Applications should be sent directly to Professor Andrew Lynch (andrew.lynch@uwa.edu.au) before 4 November should include:

• Details of the degree in which you are enrolled/enrolling (for postgraduates or honours students) or the title of your current research projects (for early career researchers)
• A 300 word statement outlining your relevant research interests, explaining how the proposed project corresponds with the aims of this Masterclass, and outlining how the event will benefit your research.

If applying for a travel bursary of up to $750 AUD to attend the Symposium and Masterclass, please also include a short, separate budget statement. Notification of acceptance will be made by 11 November. Further details of the Masterclass and Symposium, including suggestions for accommodation, will be provided to registrants.
