On fibbing considered as one of the fine arts
Art, according to Picasso, is ‘the lie that tells the truth’. Artists demonstrate their talent for elegant fibbing both in their art and the comments they make upon it. Why are we so willing to accept without question the ‘beautiful lies’ that artists produce? And how does art history navigate truth and untruth in art?
Dr Chris McAuliffe is Director of the Ian Potter Museum of Art at The University of Melbourne. Prior to that he was for ten years a lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at The University of Melbourne. Dr McAuliffe has researched and written extensively in the area of contemporary art, and is the author of Art and Suburbia, 1996, Linda Marrinon: let her try, 2007, and Jon Cattapan: possible histories, 2008. He is a regular media commentator on the arts and has appeared on ABC TV’s ‘Sunday Arts’ program since 2006. In September 2011, he will take up the position of Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard University.
The lecture is named in honour of and in memory of the founder of the Art History Chapter, Rae Alexander (1919–2009). Rae convened the Art History Chapter in 1996 and under her leadership and subsequent support the Chapter has prospered. Her legacy has been its continued success which is today reflected in this lecture.
