Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) is pleased to present a special lecture by visiting international curator and writer, Felicity D. Scott.

Felicity D. Scott will discuss her book, Outlaw Territories: Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-insurgency (Zone Books, 2016), which outlines the historical and contemporary legacy of the American counterculture from the 1960s and ‘70s and its effects on environmental governance and the management of populations globally.

During this lecture Scott will draw connections between many subjects including Kevin Roche’s designs for the Ford Foundation Headquarters and One United Nations Plaza in New York; the Open Land communes and Earth People’s Parks; two major UN world conferences (the Human Environment in Stockholm of 1972 and the Human Settlements or Habitat in Vancouver of 1976); Nicholas Negroponte’s founding of the Architecture Machine Group at MIT; and Gerard K O’Neill’s 1970s proposals for human space colonies.

Felicity D. Scott is Associate Professor of Architecture, Director of the PhD Program in Architecture (History and Theory), and Co-Director of the Program in Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture (CCCP) at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University. Her work as an architectural historian and theorist focuses on articulating genealogies of political and theoretical engagement with questions of technological and geopolitical transformation in modern and contemporary architecture, as well as within the discourses and institutions that have shaped and defined the discipline. In addition to numerous articles on architecture and contemporary art, she has published Architecture or Techno-Utopia: Politics After Modernism(MIT Press, 2007), Living Archive 7: Ant Farm (ACTAR, 2008), Disorientation: Bernard Rudofsky in the Empire of Signs (Sternberg Press, 2016), and Outlaw Territories: Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-Insurgency (Zone Books, 2016). She has co-curated two exhibitions with Mark Wasiuta, Ant Farm: Radical Hardware (2008) and Les Levine: Bio-Tech Rehearsals, 1965-1975 (2016) and collaborated with Mark Wasiuta and Marco Fusinato on La Fine del Mondo a curatorial project in the Monditalia section of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia (2014). Scott is also a founding co-editor of Grey Room, a quarterly journal of architecture, art, media and politics published quarterly by MIT Press.
