Pae White is an internationally renowned multi-media artist who creates large-scale installations in a variety of media; from large-scale machine-loomed tapestries to ceramics to tinfoil.  Her practice merges art, design, craft and architecture to create works that transcend traditional boundaries.

The Hancock Fellow, established by the Tapestry Foundation in 1998 in honour of former Chairman Arnold Hancock OBE, allows opportunities to bring internationally recognised artists in tapestry, textile and design to visit the ATW and share their expertise. Previous Hancock Fellow have included Reiko Sudo, NUNO Corporation, Beverly Gordon and Dr Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye.

As the 2017 Hancock Fellow, White will provide insight into her long career with a focus on some recent projects that use textiles as a contemporary art medium.

At the heart of White’s artistic practice is an interest in capturing fleeting, everyday beauty, and challenging the viewer’s understanding of the world around us. She describes her work as an attempt to “subvert the viewer’s expected relationship to an everyday object, nudging them off balance, encouraging a deeper look.”

For her monumental tapestries, White works with computer technology to reproduce digital pictures of everyday materials in the woven form. The contrast between the spectacular scale and the humble origins of the subject matter, which includes junk, food, wrapping paper etc, playfully subverts viewer’s expectations of what tapestries can depict.

With an international career spanning more than 20 years, White has exhibited widely across major institutions and exhibitions with notable high-profile projects for the 2009 Venice Biennale and the 2010 Whitney Biennale.

Her work is held in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, the Art institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

White is one of the participating artists in the inaugural NGV Triennial 2017, where her work Spearmint to Peppermint 2013, a huge machine-loomed tapestry will be on display.

Pae White’s visit to Melbourne has been made possible by the Australian Tapestry Workshop and the National Gallery of Victoria.
