What are you looking at? | Giuseppe Bonito’s The Turkish Embassy to the Court of Naples in 1741

What are you looking at? | Giuseppe Bonito’s The Turkish Embassy to the Court of Naples in 1741 John Weretka The Turkish Embassy to the Court of Naples in 1741 currently on display at the Museo del Prado exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. Giuseppe Bonito’s name is not one that anyone other than the most enthusiastic lover of late Baroque art is likely to know. This Neapolitan painter was born in 1707 and was a student of Solimena. From the 1740s, he was engaged as a portraitist to the Neapolitan court. Wider professional recognition followed in the 1750s with nomination as a pittore di camera, election to the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome, and promotion to the directorship of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples. Bonito’s output included religious works, such as the now-destroyed vault fresco…

Conference | Baroque to Neo-Baroque: Emotion and the Seduction of the Senses

Baroque to Neo-Baroque: Emotion and the Seduction of the Senses Both the historical baroque and the neo-baroque are increasingly serious areas of global intellectual enquiry. This conference contributes to a fuller picture of the relationship between the two phenomena and, in particular, explores the engagement of emotion in the cultural productions of the baroque and the neo-baroque. Our own interest is in applying a new methodology to the study of baroque and neo-baroque cultures, one grounded in unique sensory and spatial approaches, and themes.  The conference is being organised by Professor Angela Ndalianis (The University of Melbourne) and Dr Lisa Beaven (La Trobe University). Keynote Speakers Monika Kaup (Associate Professor of English and Latin American Studies, University of Washington) ‘Feeling Baroque: Joy, Sadness, Pride, as well as a Spinozist Solution to the Quest for Happiness’ There is unanimous agreement about the Baroque’s inherent connection with…

NGV Forum | How to look good naked – From Antiquity to the Renaissance

Forum: How to look good naked- From Antiquity to the Renaissance Sat 9 Nov, 1-3.30pm Ancient Greeks Looking Good: Nudity, Clothing and Antiquities at the NGV The ancient Greeks celebrated the body beautiful – which, for males at least, also meant the naked body. Men exercised and competed at athletic games in the nude, and their victories in both sport and war were commemorated with statues of idealised, perfectly formed nude bodies. Women in contrast were depicted clothed, until famously and scandalously the 4th century BC sculptor Praxiteles created the Aphrodite of Knidos, the first completely naked female sculpture. Painted vases show a similar obsession with idealised bodies, but also reveal a diversity of approaches to nudity: the comical side to nakedness, the ugliness as well as the erotic. This lecture places the NGV antiquities in their wider social context of…

Opinion: Thoughts on the NGV’s latest acquisition: Correggio’s Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist by David R. Marshall

Opinion: Thoughts on the NGV’s latest acquisition: Correggio’s Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist by David R. Marshall The NGV today announced the purchase of a newly discovered painting by Correggio (Antonio Allegri) of the Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist at Sotheby’s 7 July sale. By chance I was shown this painting in late May when I was looking at something else, and had an interesting discussion about it with the people from Sotheby’s, including their conservator who was doing the conservator’s report. It was not an attention-grabbing picture at first sight (especially as it was a little yellowed by varnish), but gradually the subtleties of Correggio’s hand and imagery began to emerge. It is an early work, which is always interesting with Correggio because, like Giovanni Bellini, he begins slowly,…
