This September, the National Gallery of Victoria will be presenting the latest project of US based contemporary artist Harrell Fletcher, The sound we make together (Melbourne). Harrell Fletcher is best known through his work with people outside the art world, where he has created art through collaboration and participation. Harrell Fletcher’s first Australian project will be a collaboration with seven Melbourne based community groups including Arts Project Australia, CERES, Crooked Rib Art, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Grainger Museum, Hell Gallery, RISE, and two individuals, Herb Patten and Jeff Sparrow. The participants will each reveal an aspect of contemporary and historical Melbourne, whether it is immigration, art and community, identity, urban agriculture and sustainability, urban history and politics, and even music. Exhibition – ‘Backstage with the Ballet Russes by Daryl Lindsay’
The new gallery at the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) in Tasma Terrace, East Melbourne will open this Saturday, 24th July with the exhibition Backstage with the Ballet Russes (1936-40). The exhibition will show thirty rare and never been seen before sketches of the Ballets Russes from Sir Daryl Lindsay, former Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. Sir Daryl Lindsay joined a list of many notable Australian artists who found inspiration in the tours of the Ballets Russes. These thirty sketches from Lindsay include costumes from the Australian Ballet. The launch of BackStage with the Ballets Russes by Daryl Lindsay (1936-1940) coincides with the opening up of the Trust’s headquarters - Tasma Terrace - to the public during the weekend of 24 & 25 July as part of Melbourne Open House. Alternative Practices in Design: The Collective - Past, Present & Future 9-10 July 2010 RMIT University, Melbourne The rise of social networking and peer-2-peer technology development, the return of community focused activities (eg. gardens, knitting groups, food cooperatives) and creative collectives across the fields of the visual and performing arts has reawakened the discourse around human capital, flat structures and collectives. ARCHITECTURE + PHILOSOPHY May Mo(u)rn: A Site-Writing Professor Jane Rendell Time: 6.30pm, Thursday June 10th Venue: RMIT 8.11.68 (Building 8, 360 Swanston St. Level 11, lecture theatre 68, to the right of the lifts) May Mo(u)rn is a site-writing which takes a collection of abandoned black and white photographs of modernist architectural icons found in a derelict arts and crafts house called ‘May Morn’ as a starting point for a discussion of the modernist project and its socialist ideals. Morn and mourn are homonyms, one suggests a beginning, the other an ending. Morning begins the day, while mourning – in grieving the loss of something or someone – marks an ending. Due to their deteriorating material states, the May Morn house and the paper of the photographs point towards their own disintegration – or endings, yet the buildings contained within…
