David R. Marshall – A Carracciesque Landscape at the Powerhouse

What are you looking at? A Carracci School Landscape on the lid of a virginal at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney On display in the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, at the moment is a virginal, which according to the label is a Bolognese work of 1629, made by a local priest, Vincentius de Taeggiis (85/372 OIC) (Fig. 1). The underside of the lid is painted with a landscape, by an unidentified artist (Fig. 2).  It is in a rather old-fashioned (for 1629) Flemish style, with layered trees, hunting scenes, trees composed of broad leaves painted light over dark over light (centre) and a yellow light in the sky. Call for papers: 'Palinsesti Contemporary Italian Art Online Journal

“Palinsesti”. Contemporary Italian Art On-line Journal www.palinsesti.net The Editors invite submission of an abstract of 500 words to: cfp@palinsesti.net Deadline 31th September 2010. First issue will be published in Winter 2011. Palinsesti is a peer-reviewed publication dedicated to historical studies concerning Italian Art since 1960. The editors invite contributors to submit articles for its first thematic issue: “A new methodology for the Sixties?” Did the art of the Sixties effectively introduce innovations to such a point that suggests the need to revise and adapt historical methodology according to these new objects of study (the artworks)? Is it still possible to study and analyse these artworks as a corpus comparable to the past artworks? The issue will be focused on four main points (see below):

Dr Hugh Hudson “The Del Beccuto of Florence: More on the Maternal Family of the Renaissance Artist Paolo Uccello” The Del Beccuto family ancestry can be traced to twelfth-century Florence. Although they made significant contributions to the city’s government during the Middle Ages, it was in the early Renaissance that they produced their most singular contribution to its culture and international renown, through the figure of one of their sons, the artist Paolo Uccello. This paper presents a wide-ranging discussion of the family, its social and political affiliations, its patronage and benefaction, and the influence it had on Uccello’s career, art, and identity. Fixed-term project for three years. The Print Room at Windsor Castle is responsible for the works of art on paper in the Royal Collection, including old master drawings, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century watercolours, and prints – over 150,000 items in all. Among the old master drawings is the major surviving portion of the ‘Paper Museum’ of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657), a visual encyclopaedia of the ancient and natural worlds.
