Aspects of Gustave Moreau A Free Public Forum Four expert speakers will address different aspects of Gustave Moreau’s art and work. This free public forum is held in conjunction with a major exhibition of his works, Gustave Moreau and the Eternal Feminine, at the NGV International. While his art became ever more liberated and independent, his own lifestyle became ever more reclusive. Gustave Moreau & the Eternal Feminine Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria 10 December 2010 – 10 April 2011 Reviewed by David R. Marshall Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) has always been hard to place. To his contemporaries he was an establishment painter distracted by eccentricity, and he did not fit the grand modernist narrative that lead from Impressionism to Modernism. He has settled down to being the precursor of Symbolism, the teacher who showed the way to Redon and the Symbolists but never quite made it there himself. But perhaps what emerges most from this exhibition is less his eccentricity or Symbolism than his obsessiveness. Why did he need to make so many studies, in so many various media and styles? News | Kenneth Reed Bequest for the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Kenneth Reed Bequest for the Art Gallery of New South Wales Katrina Grant Kenneth Reed, a Sydney-based lawyer, has announced that  he will bequeath a substantial collection of old master paintings, as well as collections of Italian Maiolica and eighteenth-century European porcelain to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. There are more than 70 items in total and the bequest will represent a significant addition to the gallery’s European collection. The paintings include a large number of landscapes – including view paintings and architectural capricci – several portraits and several religious a scenes. The most significant is perhaps the fully finished sketch or modello by the seventeenth-century painter Andrea Camassei ‘St Peter in prison baptising Saintss Processus and Martinian’ (c. 1630-1), which he painted in preparation for an altarpiece in fresco at St Peter’s in Rome. Lecture: Dr Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye on ‘France 1500: Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance’

Dr Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye Director of the Cluny Museum, Paris ‘France 1500: Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance’ Dr Taburet-Delahaye, visiting Hancock Fellow at the Australian Tapestry Workshop, is the principal curator of the exhibition France 1500 which opened at the Grand Palais in  Paris on 6 October 2010. This exhibition explores a time of unprecedented artistic contact and creative effervescence in France, and takes a close look at various aspects of the art of the time. The exhibition encompasses painting, sculpture, stained glass, tapestry, gold work and the art of the book. It will travel to the Art Institute of Chicago in February 2011.
