Conference | Contemporary Outsider Art: The Global Context

The University of Melbourne - 23 – 26 October 2020   Forty years after the term ‘Outsider art’ was coined by Roger Cardinal to encompass works by untrained artists who work outside the established art world, new paradigms and definitions are being sought. The current enthusiasm for these forms of expression culminated in Massimiliano Gioni’s 2013 Venice Biennale, which dedicated several exhibits to self-taught or Outsider artists. Reviewing the Biennale in Art and America, Travis Jeppesen wrote ‘the success of Gioni’s bold production signals a move beyond ‘the contemporary’ as the default category we have relied upon for far too long’. Such comments demonstrate the timeliness of this topic and the potential for this conference to contribute to and enrich our understanding of contemporary culture at the broadest level. Sacred Places, Pilgrimage and Emotions May 23-25, University of Melbourne This conference will explore the emotions created in response to sacred place or space from the late antique to the modern period and how these emotions are deployed to build ,strengthen and defend different forms of community and communal identity. There will be a focus on European pilgrimage sites and their associated rituals and material culture, between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries, particularly the way these sacred places promote collective and personal emotions through direct experience of a site or shrine, and through constructed or extended memory. Call for Papers SAHANZ XXIX 2012 - Fabulation: Myth, Nature, Heritage 29th Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand, University of Tasmania, Launceston, Tasmania, 5-8 July 2012 “Gould says of his Book of Fish, ‘what I write, & what here I paint are Experiment & Prophecy.’” Ronald Bogue writes this in Deleuzian Fabulations (2010) on Richard Flanagan’s Gould’s Book of Fish (2002), which is based on The Book of Fish (around 1832-33) by William Buelow Gould with paintings of flora and fauna (with narratives) of the penal colony on Sarah Island, Tasmania.
