NETS Victoria has announced the appointment of Mardi Nowak as Director. From NETS Ms Nowak who trained as an artist has worked as a curator and gallery manager for more than 16 years in the public gallery and local government sector most recently at the Town Hall Gallery, Hawthorn. Over the past decade she has developed over 100 exhibitions and programs, working closely with gallery staff, artists and organisations on collection building, artist-in-residence programs and overseeing public art commissions. The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines has announced that renowned curator Zara Stanhope (most recently Principal Curator and Head of Programmes, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki) as the Gallery’s Curatorial Manager of Asian and Pacific Art. The Board of Directors at Heide Museum of Modern Art (Heide) have announced that will Dr Natasha Cica will take the helm at Heide as the new Director and CEO of the museum, following the departure of Kristy Grant last year. Dr Cica does not come directly from an art curatorial background and the press release describes her as a ‘thought leader’ (always a rather meaningless term in my opinion). Her educational background is more legal and policy focused than arts or curatorial (she is an adjunct professor in the ANU College of Law), but she certainly has a strong background in the cultural sector in Australia and internationally. Appointment | Australian Centre for Photography appoints Cherie McNair as Director

The Australian Centre for Photography has announced Cherie McNair as their new director. From ACP: The Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) today announced the appointment of respected arts professional Cherie McNair as permanent Director. The Chair of Craft Victoria has announce the appointment of Richard Ferguson as the new Executive Director at Craft Victoria.  Richard will be commencing his role in mid-February 2017. From Craft Victoria Richard has been involved in the cultural, heritage and education sectors for more than 30 years in both Australia and England. He is also a craft and arts practitioner. His initial tertiary training was at the National Art School in ceramics.  Later training in visual arts and photography enabled him to undertake original research and Antarctic field work, on five expeditions, on the use of photography on polar expeditions initially based at the Mawson Institute for Antarctic Research at the University of Adelaide. News | Australian Catholic University appoints first curator

Furthering its commitment to celebrating and sharing art Australian Catholic University (ACU) has appointed Caroline Field as its first curator. In the newly-created role, Ms Field will be responsible for managing the University’s extensive art collection and documenting, developing and displaying the collection across each of its seven campuses. “The University is very fortunate to be holding such magnificent treasures and artworks,” Ms Field said. “We want to use and enliven them and we want to share and promote them with the University community and the general public.” Previously the Curator and Manager of the Deakin University art collection, Ms Field is a well-known figure in the Australian art community. News | Mami Kataoka appointed Artistic Director of 21st Biennale of Sydney

The Biennale of Sydney has announced that the artistic director for the 21st Biennale in 2018 will be Mami Kataoka.    Mami Kataoka, is the Chief Curator at the Mori Art Museum (MAM) in Tokyo, and she is the first curator from Asia to be appointed as Artistic Director of the Biennale of Sydney. She was one of thirteen eminent international advisors to this year’s 20th edition and already has strong connections to local curators and artist. Ms. Kataoka is regarded as a key figure in analysing socio-historical and generational trends within Japanese and Asian art. The Greater Shepparton City Council has announced that Dr Rebecca Coates will take up the role of Director of Shepparton Art Museum (SAM). Dr Coates has been in the role of Acting Director since August 2015 and replaced Kirsten Paisley who left SAM to work for the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
