A Plan, A Testimony, and A Digital Map: Analyzing the Architecture of the Holocaust The Power Institute and the Sydney Digital Humanities Research Group are pleased to present a lecture by Paul Jaskot, Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies, Duke University. Taking an architectural plan and a specific survivor testimony as examples, Jaskot’s lecture will explore how recent methods in the Digital Humanities–particularly digital mapping–can be used to investigate plans and testimonies to raise new questions about the spatial and historical significance of the Holocaust. About the Lecture  The Holocaust was a profoundly spatial experience that involved not only the movement of millions of European Jews but also their confinement and murder in sites specifically built for the genocide. Rediscovering the Australian Landscape 1940 – 1980: Nolan, Drysdale and Williams Dr Richard Haese – Honorary Associate, Faculty of Humanities, La Trobe University Beginning in the 1940s Sidney Nolan and Russell Drysdale began the rediscovery of the Australian landscape from a modernist perspective, beginning a journey that would take them to the very centre of this arid continent. The challenge of rendering the experience of this so called ‘dead heart’ produced among the most radical paintings in Australian art – a challenge met only by the equally radical landscape painting of Fred Williams from the 1960s onwards. Sea of Dreams: The Lure of Port Phillip Bay 1830-1914 Opens at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery Wednesday 7 December 10am Shattered dreams, fresh beginnings, an expansive economy, rising fears and the emergence of a middle class are detailed in this rich display that traces the journeys of so many who were lured by the dream of a better life. Sea of dreams tells the fascinating story of Port Phillip Bay and the integral part it played in 19th and early 20th century survival, settlement, trade and commerce, defence and leisure. With more than 100 works displayed, many of Australia’s best known and loved artists are represented.
