VCA’s ART150 | NGV Floor talks

On 28 May 2017, the Victorian College of the Arts and the National Gallery of Victoria will present a series of floor talks by VCA Art staff, including VCA Director Su Baker, Jon Cattapan, Elizabeth Gower, Stieg Persson, Raafat Ishak, Kate Daw, Lou Hubbard, Bernhard Sachs, Cate Consandine and Jon Campbell, as part of the VCA’s ART150 celebrations in 2017. Medieval Renaissance Art Forum at the University of Melbourne

A new Medieval and Renaissance Reading Group is being set up at the Univeristy of Melbourne, see below for more detail. A proposal is being considered to form a reading group at the University of Melbourne to discuss medieval and early modern art and art history, with the working title the “MedRen Art Forum”. Dr Vincent Alessi is a Senior Lecturer in Visual Arts at La Trobe University and an alumni of The University of Melbourne. His research interests include the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, mid-late nineteenth century European art, nineteenth century popular graphic illustration and Australian contemporary visual art and curatorial practice. Vincent completed his PhD on Van Gogh’s collection of black-and-white popular illustrations and is currently undertaking research on the influence of Charles Dickens on Van Gogh. Since its launch in 2013, Bell’s green canvas tent, with its sign declaring, “White invaders you are living on stolen land”, has been steadily touring the world – from Sydney and Brisbane to New York, Venice and Jerusalem. Lecture | Cecilia Vicuña, About to Happen – Julia Bryan-Wilson | University of Melbourne

Associate Professor Julia Bryan-Wilson will give a lecture on Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña. Her lecture will discuss Vicuña’s sculptural work looking closely at her textile-based work from the 1970s to think through issues of production and materiality. Drawing on her forthcoming book, Fray: Art and Textile Politics, Julia Bryan-Wilson investigates how Vicuña’s use of knotted threads and strings signified politically during the Pinochet dictatorship and in relation to Andean systems of knowledge production. She explores a range of art and performance from several decades of Vicuña’s practice to illuminate how textiles unravel preconceived ideas about handicraft, industry, and memory. Julia Bryan-Wilson’s writing has appeared in Afterall, Aperture, Artforum, Art Journal, Bookforum, October, Oxford Art Journal, and Parkett. News and Exhibition | Sidney Nolan’s man behind Ned Kelly mask revealed | Heide MoMA

Recent research by Paula Dredge and Kendrah Morgan with assistance from the Australian Synchrotron has revelead a face behind the mask of one of Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly paintings. From April 22 to May 14 Heide will host a virtual reality display that will allow visitors to explore this ‘face behind the mask.’ From Heide Working in collaboration with the scientific research centre Australian Synchrotron, and utilising its state of the art technology, art conservators have imaged pigments buried underneath layers of paint to reveal a face behind the mask of Sidney Nolan’s painting Ned Kelly, “Nobody knows anything about my case but myself” 1945.
