Exhibition | Seeing Voices | Horsham Regional Art Gallery

Seeing Voices, an exhibition that thinks through how the voice is visualised, employed and reimagined in contemporary art, has opened at Horsham Regional Gallery and runs until 10 December. Seeing voices, a collaboration between NETS Victoria and Monash University Museum of Art I MUMA uses the Monash University Collection as a springboard for thinking through the voice. The exhibition encompasses drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and video, and a live performance with each iteration of the exhibition. In the exhibition, the voice might act as a metaphor for  collective action, for speaking out against injustice and coming together in gestures of solidarity. It can be a marker of cultural and geographic specificity or the trace of disappearing language. Current initiatives supporting the international practice of art history, such as the Clark Art Institute’s Mellon Foundation-funded projects, are aimed at the exchange of information and the facilitation of travel and study. Final days to enter the Power Publications Dissertation Prize for Indigenous Art Research

Deadline: 20th October 2017 The dissertation prize for the best PhD, DPhil or Master by Research written on Indigenous art. Supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, this prize supports new research and writing on Indigenous art within a scholarly context. The prize is not restricted to authors of Indigenous heritage. Academic supervisors will be invited to nominate candidates and a jury led by Professor Ian McLean, of the University of Melbourne, will select an awardee. The prize will be financial ($2,000) and the winning author will be invited to present their research at the University of Sydney. This year’s 20th annual La Trobe University Art History Alumni Rae Alexander Lecture will be presented by leading art historian Dr Richard Haese. He will explore the landmark exhibition, The Field on the 50th anniversary of this remarkable showcase. The Field is regarded as a landmark exhibition in Australian art history – a radical showcase of 74 abstract and conceptual, colour field, geometric and hard edge paintings and sculptures. Influenced by the American origins of abstract art, the exhibition opened to much controversy at the NGV in 1968 with its silver foil-covered walls and geometric light fittings, boldly launching the careers of a generation of young Australian artists including Sydney Ball, Peter Booth, Janet Dawson and Robert Jacks. They galvanized the movements of Dada and Surrealism, and influenced the development of concrete art and organic abstraction. Since 1977 the Stiftung Arp e.V. has overseen the greater part of both artists’ estates. It holds one of the most comprehensive collections of their work and manages most of their written and photographic archives.
