Marti Friedlander Lectureship in Photographic Practices and History

The Art History programme sits within the School of Humanities and offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that range from historical European and American arts through the arts of the Pacific to contemporary art and cultural heritage.
This is a permanent full-time position, at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to tenured Assistant/Associate Professor level in US). Applicants will be PhD qualified and demonstrate the capacity for productive, high quality research; experience of successful undergraduate teaching; and the readiness to undertake postgraduate supervision. In the University we want to reflect the diversity of our city and therefore welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
Teaching will focus on the practices, history and theories of photography from their beginnings to the present day. Topics will begin more broadly and include major photographers, genres, movements and technological developments, as well as the place of New Zealand photography in international contexts’. At graduate level teaching will become focused and specific, reflecting the new appointee’s specialisation and research interests. It is anticipated that this new lectureship and any subsequently developed courses will encourage interdisciplinary and cross-faculty enrolments.
