Senior Fellowships
The Balsdon, Hugh Last and Paul Mellon Centre Fellows are the Senior Scholars in residence and as such are encouraged to take an interest in the work of other award-holders at the BSR, particularly those in fields close to their own, and to contribute to one of the BSR’s current research themes. Senior scholars also give a public lecture as part of their fellowship
Balsdon Fellowship
Research area: humanities and social sciences (including the archaeology, art history, history, society and culture of Italy, from prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: established scholars normally in post in a UK university. Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens, or must have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2017 not less than four years of residence in the UK; or must hold a post in a Higher Education Institution in the UK
Duration: 3 months

Hugh Last Fellowship
Research area: For research on classical antiquity (excluding archaeological fieldwork and work on Roman Britain)
Open to: established scholars normally in post in a UK university. Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens, or must have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2017 not less than four years of residence in the UK; or must hold a post in a Higher Education Institution in the UK
Duration: 3 months

Paul Mellon Centre Rome Fellowship
The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art sponsors an annual 3-month Rome Fellowship
Research area: Anglo-Italian artistic and architectural topics
Open to: Senior or mid-career scholars in the field, including independent scholars
Duration: 3 months
Research Grant: Independent scholars: £6,000. Full-time university employees: £2,300 plus £7,500 towards teaching replacement at the Fellow’s home institution

Awards for Early Career Scholars
Rome Fellowships
Research area: humanities and social sciences (including the archaeology, art history, history, society and culture of Italy, from prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants for Fellowships normally must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the closing date for applications (so awarded no earlier than January 2015). Applicants must be British citizens or must have been awarded their doctorate by a UK university
Duration: 9 months
Research Grant: £550 per month.

Rome Scholarships
Research area: humanities and social sciences (including the archaeology, art history, history, society and culture of Italy, from prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants who intend to submit their doctorate no later than 31 August 2020 but will be awaiting their viva and award of their degree. Applicants must be British citizens or must be completing their doctorate at a UK university
Duration: 9 months
Research Grant: £500 per month
Closing date: 16 January 2021
Rome Awards
Research area: humanities and social sciences (including the archaeology, art history, history, society and culture of Italy, from prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants should meet the eligibility criteria for either a Rome Fellowship or a Rome Scholarship
Duration: for an extended period of study in Italy, normally 3 months
Research Grant : £450 per month
Closing date: 16 January 2021
Rome Award funded by the Roger and Ingrid Pilkington Charitable Trust
Research area: humanities and social sciences (including the archaeology, art history, history, society and culture of Italy, from prehistory to the modern period)
Open to: applicants normally will have begun a programme of research in the general field for which the Award is being sought, whether or not registered for a higher degree. Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens; or must be studying or have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2017 not less than four years of residence in the UK
Duration: 3 months
Research Grant : £450 per month

Judith Maitland Memorial Award
Research area: humanities and social sciences (although, all other things being equal preference will be given to applicants undertaking research in the fields of medieval or ancient history)
Open to: applicants normally will have begun a programme of research in the general field for which the Award is being sought, whether or not registered for a higher degree. Applicants must be British or Commonwealth citizens; or must be studying or have studied at postgraduate level in a Higher Education Institution in the UK, having completed by October 2017 not less than four years of residence in the UK

Applications for Rome Fellowships, Rome Scholarships, Rome Awards, the Rome Award funded by the Roger and Ingrid Pilkington Charitable Trust and the Judith Maitland Memorial Award are considered in a single competition. Separate applications are not required. Preference may be given to those who have completed their doctorate.
