Dating back to the foundation of RMIT as the Working Man’s College in 1887, the School of Art has an important place in the history of RMIT and the State of Victoria.  It delivers programs ranging from vocational education certificates through to PhDs covering the full range of art specialisations, including Photography, Art Theory and History, Fine Art Photography, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Gold and Silversmithing, Sculpture, Sound, Media Arts, Arts Management, Public Art and Visual Arts.

The Role and Your Responsibilities

Reporting to the Dean of the School, the Associate Dean Fine Art is a critical leadership and management role responsible for driving learning and teaching quality, research relevance and industry engagement for the discipline. They will be expected to work across disciplines and schools to deliver effective learning and teaching and research outcomes.

The Associate Dean is accountable for providing strategic and academic leadership and management to the discipline, consistent with the University and College strategic plans and objectives, and for contributing at a senior level to the strategic planning and development of the School. This is an integrated leadership role that includes learning and teaching, research and industry engagement.

The Associate Dean is a member of the School executive team and will work collaboratively with all members of the management team and staff across the school to ensure the School achieves its strategic objectives.

Skills & Experience Required

To be successful in the role you will possess strong leadership skills and experience in leading and managing academic teams in a collegiate environment to deliver strategic objectives. You will bring with you a well-developed understanding of budget management, quality management, and good governance.

The School will value your capacity to think strategically based on organisational priorities and objectives whilst displaying a high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills.  These skills will be required for your interactions with senior executives and external bodies and your involvement with cross disciplinary and cross-sectoral teams.  Your leadership and expertise in learning and teaching along with your substantial academic, research and relevant professional achievement will contribute to the overall standing of the School both nationally and internationally.

Mandatory PhD or demonstrated equivalence, combined with knowledge and achievements that meet the professorial criteria.

A Working with Children check is required for this role.
