The History Program at The University of Melbourne is at the forefront of teaching and research internationally. The Hansen Trust has been established to support innovation and excellence in History at Melbourne and to provide students with an outstanding education: to open pathways into great careers and graduate opportunities; to underline the continuing relevance and importance of history; and to nurture and engage community passion for this important field of study.

$30,000 per year for the length of a full-time PhD candidature

A key feature of the scholarship is a mentoring program that provides valuable experience in tertiary teaching and the promotion of History to the community.

The successful applicant must meet the Entry Requirements for the full-time PhD Arts ( and have received a minimum result of first class Honours in the qualifying degree. Applications are welcome from both domestic and international students and meeting the University’s English language requirements is essential. Applicants must be enrolling in the PhD and not have already started.

Applications are to be made alongside and in accordance with the Faculty of Arts PhD application process:

Applicants will be advised of the outcome via email within 4-6 weeks after the closing date.

Application process
Applicants are required to complete the online application form and:

  • Develop a research proposal
  • Nominate a proposed supervisor
  • Prepare a 500-word statement outlining their views on the significance of History teaching and the role of History in our society.
