Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA in association with the Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Brisbane is pleased to present a special lecture by visiting international curator Kitty Scott, Co-curator of the Liverpool Biennial 2018. The lecture will be convened by Tara McDowell, Associate Professor and Director of Curatorial Practice, Monash University.

Kitty Scott will introduce the artistic concept and rationale behind the 10th edition of the Liverpool Biennial. Beautiful world, where are you? (14 July – 28 October 2020) is an exhibition that invites artists and audiences to reflect on a world of social, political and economic turmoil.

Liverpool Biennial is the UK biennial of contemporary art and is curated by Kitty Scott and Sally Tallant with the Liverpool Biennial team. Taking place over 15 weeks across the city in public spaces, galleries, museums and online, the Biennial commissions artists from around the world to make and present work in the context of Liverpool. Also showing as part of Liverpool Biennial 2018 are the John Moores Painting Prize, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, and the Biennial Fringe.

Kitty Scott is the Carol and Morton Rapp Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada. Previously she was Director of Visual Arts at The Banff Centre, Canada; Chief Curator at the Serpentine Gallery, London; and Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada. Her extensive resume includes exhibitions of artists such as Francis Alys, Stephen Andrews, Janet Cardiff, Paul Chan, Peter Doig, Janice Kerbel, Ragnar Kjartansson, Ken Lum, Scott McFarland, Silke Otto-Knapp, Frances Stark and Ron Terada. She was a core agent for dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012. Scott has written extensively on contemporary art for catalogues, books and journals, and edited the publication Raising Frankenstein: curatorial education and its discontents (2010). She regularly lectures at arts schools and curatorial programs throughout North America.

Kitty Scott’s visit to Australia has been organised by the IMA with support from MUMA.

Tara McDowell’s curatorial work has focused recently on speculative histories, experimental pedagogy, and public space. She was a curator of the 2nd Tbilisi Triennial (2015) and Founding Senior Editor of The Exhibitionist, a journal on curatorial practice and exhibition making. She publishes and lectures frequently, and her writing has appeared in outlets such as art-agenda, Artforum, Fillip, Mousse, and un Magazine. McDowell has held curatorial appointments at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, where she mounted many solo and group exhibitions, including projects on Minimalism, Fluxus, assemblage, and avant-garde cinema. McDowell holds a PhD in the art history from the University of California, Berkeley.
