Holmesglen acquired Burchill and McCamley’s X Shield in 2013. Part of a series completed after the artists first encountered the Papua New Guinea shields held in the Oceania Collection at the National Gallery of Victoria, X Shield was included in the Heide exhibition, Future Primitive in the same year.

The artists have been working both individually and collaboratively since the mid-1980s. Their practice embraces a wide variety of media including photography, film, drawing, sculpture and painting. Throughout their combined career, Burchill and McCamley have critically engaged with the history and forms of modernist art and its relationship to everyday life, as reconsidered through feminist, psychoanalytic, filmic and spatial discourses. Collaboration has been an important aspect of their practice. The artists will discuss the trajectory of their work over the last 20 years, and their most recent collaborative exhibitions: Imaginary Accord, 2015 at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane: The
Lakes Project, 2015, Mildura Palimpsest Biennale and their most recent exhibitions at Neon Parc, Melbourne.
Janet and Jennifer will be speaking at the Chadstone campus on Thursday 2nd June.
