Borders, Barriers, Walls

To coincide with MUMA’s exhibition Borders, Barriers, Walls curated by Francis E. Parker, this panel discussion will address some of the exhibition’s key themes and concerns.

Panelists include: Associate Professor Leanne Weber, co-director of the Border Crossing Observatory, and participating artists Catherine Ryan and Amy Spiers. The panel discussion will be convened byFrancis E. Parker, MUMA – Curator Exhibitions.

Borders, barriers and walls delineate this group exhibition of Australian and international artists. It reflects on how these contested and complex forms shape the world, producing situations of separation, isolation or thwarted passage across the globe. Whether they be physical constructions, psychological constructs or natural defences, the exhibition considers the forces by which these divides are either upheld or breached. Borders, barriers, walls features more than twenty-five artworks ranging from video installation, painting, photography and sculpture. The exhibition includes a new commission by local artists Amy Spiers and Catherine Ryan.

Leanne Weber is an ARC Future Fellow in internal border policing and a co-director of the Border Crossing Observatory (BOb) – an innovative virtual research centre, based at Monash University, that connects Australian and international stakeholders to high quality, independent and cutting edge research on border crossings. She has studied and worked at the Institute of Criminology in Cambridge and the Human Rights Centre at Essex University; held research contracts at the Centre for Criminological Research at Oxford University; and taught criminology at the University of Western Sydney and The University of New South Wales. She was previously the holder of a Larkins Fellowship at Monash University.

Leanne established the Australian Border Deaths Database with Professor Sharon Pickering and as part of the Observatory’s ‘Deaths at the Global Frontier’ project, culminating in the publication of the bookGlobalization and Borders: Death at the Global Frontier in 2011 (Palgrave McMillan). She is the author of the following book publications: Rethinking Border Control For A Globalizing World: A Preferred Future (ed., 2015); Crime, Justice and Human Rights (with Fishwick and Malmo, 2014); Policing Non-Citizens (2013); Stop and Search: Police and Power in Global Context (with Bowling [eds], 2013);Borders, Mobility and Technologies of Control (with Pickering [eds], 2006.
