Gertrude Contemporary is proud to announce the launch of a new off-site gallery and project space, Gertrude Glasshouse, which opened to the public on Friday 24 July 2020 with the exhibition What noise does a pig make? by Gertrude Studio Artist Tully Moore. The official launch of the space and Moore’s exhibition will take place on Thursday the 13th of August from 6pm.
Located in Collingwood just five minutes from the organisation’s Fitzroy headquarters, Gertrude Glasshouse will serve as a transitional space as Gertrude Contemporary moves closer to its anticipated move from the address that gave it its name thirty years ago. The Glasshouse venture is supported by long-term Gertrude Contemporary patrons Michael Schwarz and David Clouston, who own the new venue. The Fitzroy-based architecture firm SIBLING were commissioned to turn the existing building used as storage into a multi-purpose exhibition space. Gertrude Glasshouse will function as an exhibition venue for Gertrude Contemporary’s Studio Artist program, providing a much larger, purpose-built space that affords Studio Artists the opportunity to stage more ambitious installations.
The inaugural Gertrude Glasshouse exhibition, What noise does a pig make? by Tully Moore, brings together a series of sculptural paintings, banners, and video works. The exhibition takes as its starting point the era following the global financial crisis of 2008. Continuing into the present day, it is an era of constraint, recession and austerity. Defined by global economic instability, the collapse of financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments and stock market down-turns all over the world, the widespread effects of recession and government cut-backs necessitate examination. How can this irrational system’s effects be visualised? Historically, such disproportionate wealth distribution has been portrayed in a satirical or stylised bias that describes a distrust of those in control. This new body of work by Moore reinterprets found images and icons that portray this moment in time.
Tully Moore completed his Honours in Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne in 2008. He has exhibited at Westspace, MOP Projects, FirstDraft and TCB, as well as being part of Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria. Moore was the recipient of the John Vickery Scholarship and the Roger Kemp Memorial Prize in 2007 whilst studying at VCA, and in 2011 was a recipient of the Australia Council Residency (Liverpool, UK). In 2013, Tully was awarded the Marten Bequest Scholarship for Painting.
