2015 marks the tenth anniversary of the Gertrude Contemporary Emerging Writers Program. The Program provides a unique opportunity for emerging visual arts writers nation-wide to develop their writing practice, publish their work, and gain further insight into the field of contemporary art writing through a year-long mentorship with an established art historian, curator or writer.
This year Gertrude has renovated its Emerging Writers Program to be more adaptive to the specific skills, strengths and style of its Emerging Writers. As in previous years, applicants selected for the Program will be paired with a mentor for a period of one year. With their mentors’ help, Emerging Writers will produce two pieces of professional writing for publication, one of which will be a Studio 12 catalogue essay. In 2015, however, Gertrude diversifies its partner organisations so that Emerging Writers can publish their work in a forum most appropriate to their ambitions. The 2015 EWP’s partner organisations include, but are not limited to: eyeline,unMagazine, Discipline, West Space Journal, Vault, Dissect, Realtime, Canvas on FBI Radio, and No Brow on 4ZZZ Radio. The second text can take the form of an artist profile, an exhibition review, a critical essay, a radio piece, an online text with audio-visual content, or something else entirely
2015 Mentors
Amelia Barikin is a contemporary art historian and Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland. Recent publications include Parallel Presents: The Art of Pierre Huyghe (MIT Press, 2013).
Jan Bryant writes on contemporary art practices and film. She works at Monash University teaching theory in the Art School. Her most recent writing was on Adelle Mills’s work for ACCA’sNew15 show.
Rex Butler teaches in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at the University of Queensland. He recently completed a Reader’s Guide to Deleuze and Guattari’s What is Philosophy?
Grace McQuilten is an art historian, artist, curator and Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow in the School of Art at RMIT University. Her research interests include modern and contemporary art, design, consumer culture, social enterprise and community development.
N.B. The 2015 Program focusses on emerging writers based in Melbourne and Brisbane. Emerging Writers from Queensland will be required to travel to Melbourne to research their Studio 12 exhibition catalogue essay.

• Curriculum Vitae
• A writing sample of up to 700 w ords (preferably a catalogue essay or review of an artwork, exhibition or event rather than a university essay or thesis extract. This does not need to have been previously published)
