Art and Psychedelia | Lars Bang Larsen
Independent curator Lars Bang Larsen will present his research in art and psychedelia from both academic and exhibition making perspectives. He will discuss the connection between art and psychedelic imagery, concepts and practices in relation to his recent curatorial projects B/W Sensorium, as part of Dexter Bang Sinister at Charlottenborg Exhibition Hall, Copenhagen (2012), and Reflections from Damaged Life, Raven Row, London (2013). This line of enquiry follows a non-linear path, through individual artistic interpretations of how the psychedelic notion of transformation might lead to new possibilities for experience.
Lars Bang Larsen is an independent curator and writer based in Barcelona and Copenhagen, whose exhibitions and books consider artists’ engagement with counter culture and social activism from the 1960s onwards. He has a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, where he completed his dissertation on psychedelic art and culture of the 1960s, including its international dissemination. He recently organized Radical Enlightenment: A Symposium on Cybernetics and the Soul, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013), and has co-curated group exhibitions including A History of Irritated Material, Raven Row, London (2010), and Populism Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2005) and was the curator of the Danish participation for the Sao Paolo Biennial in 2004. His publications include Art and Psychedelia (2013), The Critical Mass of Mediation (2012), The Model: A Model for Qualitative Society, 1968 (2010), and Fundamentalisms of the New Order (2004), as well as being a regular contributor to Artforum, Afterall and Frieze.
Lars Bang Larsen will be introduced by Charlotte Day, Director Monash University Museum of Art, with the talk convened by Tara McDowell, Director Curatorial Practice, Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture, Monash University.
