Call for Papers | Contesting Identities: photography, narrative and the self

Contesting Identities: photography, narrative and the self

Inaugural Biennial Photographic Symposium, 31st August 2013, Ballarat, Victoria

Call for Papers – extended date for submissions

Due to continued expressions of interest the deadline for submissions for the inaugural Ballarat International Foto Biennale Symposium has been extended until 24 June 2020.

We are also pleased to announce that our two keynote speakers will be Anne O’Hehir, Assistant Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia, and Jill Orr, renowned international performance artist based in Australia.

J.M. Coetzee has said that ‘all autobiography is storytelling, all writing is autobiography’. If we take this maxim to include visual self-representation, what does this say about the relationship between notions of truth and identity in contemporary visual and literary culture? The Symposium will address ideas surrounding photographic and literary representations of selfhood and constructions of identity. How is identity currently being expressed through self-portraiture and autobiography? What new cultural formations are produced by changing interactions between contemporary practitioners and audiences? How is the representation of identity mediated by new media and interdisciplinary creative practices?

Other subjects may include:

  • Identity and performance
  • Posing, posturing and the self-narrative
  • The ‘selfie’ in contemporary social media
  • Self-portraiture and therapy
  • Identity politics and globalisation
  • Historical perspectives on self-portraiture and autobiography

We are inviting papers of presentations of creative projects. Proposals are welcome from creative practitioners, researchers, and postgraduate students working across all aspects of the arts, including photography, multimedia, performance, and writing.

Send abstracts of 300 words or detailed expressions of interest for a 15-20 minute presentation to Nina Ross at Photography Studies College by Monday 24 June 2013: nross@psc.edu.au. Notification of acceptances will be sent by 1 July.

Papers and creative projects from the symposium may be submitted for publication in the edited online journal One Thousand Words.
