Call for Papers: Revisiting the Cloister

Revisiting the Cloister: Monastery and Convent Architecture in Nineteenth-Century Britain London, October 6, 2020 Deadline: Feb 29, 2021 Victorian convent and monastic buildings embodied diverse theological, social, cultural and gender discourses within nineteenth-century Britain, yet these structures have received limited academic attention. On Saturday 6 October 2020 in London, The Victorian Society will host a wide-ranging symposium to explore these multi-functional sites – spaces not only of devotion, contemplation and leisure but also of artistic production, education, industry and social care – from an ecumenical perspective. Too often, scholarship in nineteenth-century religious architecture has been divided across denominational lines. ‘Revisiting the Cloister’ seeks to engage with the productive cross fertilization of aesthetic and theological ideas arising from an interlaced rather than sectarian social milieu. Shepparton Art Museum reopens after refurbishment

Shepparton Art Museum reopens after refurbishment The Shepparton ARt Museum (SAM) will reopen on Friday 17th February after a $1.98 million redevelopment. The Art Museum now features international standard climate control, state of the art LED lighting, six new upstairs galleries and a new public programs workshop. SAM will reopen with two major new exhibitions. Sir John Longstaff: Portrait of a Lady (more info) will be a major exhibition of work by Shepparton’s most famous artist, and will feature paintings on loan from major public and private collections. The Indigenous Ceramic Art Award (more info) will showcase the best Indigenous ceramic artists working across Australia, from Echuca to the Torres Strait. Ten years ago, a group of Australian photographers began Oculi. Committed by a collective vision to represent contemporary Australia and its regions, each member of the group embraces a range of distinctive styles and perspectives that include a strong documentary focus. The exhibition comprises approximately 80 photographic images of Australia as we understand and experience it today. Exhibition Fred Kruger - Intimate Landscapes The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, 4 February to 27 May 2012  On 4 February the National Gallery of Victoria will open Fred Kruger: Intimate Landscapes, the first comprehensive survey of Fred Kruger’s (1831–88) photographs ever to be mounted. The exhibition features features over 100 works drawn predominantly from the NGV Collection and incorporates loans from Museum Victoria, the State Library of Victoria and private collections. Fred Kruger was one of the leading landscape photographers of the 19th century in Australia, working extensively throughout Victoria. Kruger migrated from Germany in 1860 and a few years later opened a photographic studio in Carlton, Melbourne before moving his thriving practice to Geelong.
