Background

Understanding the conservation of material culture is framed by the values obtained from diverse and broad disciplines. Together the values identify the line of best fit to inform our understanding of a material that is uniquely constructed and aged in an array of climatic conditions.

This one-day conservation symposium organised by the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation (CCMC) includes five panels on current materials based research in Australia across the themes of conservation methodologies, data management, climate and materials, imaging and non-destructive analysis and materials analysis. Research draws on a number of research grants awarded by the Australian Research Council including The Twentieth Century in Paint, and strong institutional engagement across Australia, Southeast Asia, the UK and the USA.

Speakers include: Professor Steven Prawer, Director, Melbourne Materials Institute, The University of Melbourne; Ms Marcelle Scott, Academic Programs Coordinator, CCMC; Ms Paula Dredge, APAI Candidate and Paintings Conservator, The University of Melbourne and hosted by Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW); Ms Anne Carter, Senior Paintings Conservator, Queensland Art Gallery; Ms Deborah Lau, Research Group Leader, Surface Coatings, Materials Science and Engineering, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO); Mr Suleiman Odat, PhD candidate, School of Information Tecnology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland; Ms Sarah Slade, Storage, Preservation and Conservation Manager, State Library of Victoria and PhD Candidate, CCMC; Dr Nicole Tse, Australian Research Council Post Doctorate Fellow, CCMC; Ms Caroline Kyi, PhD Candidate, ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry Biotechnology and CCMC; Associate Professor Ann Roberts, Deputy Head, School of Physics, University of Melbourne; Kathryn Fairfull-Smith, Research Fellow, Faculty of Science and Technology, Queensland University of Technology; Mr David Thurrowgood, Conservation Research, National Gallery of Victoria; Associate Professor Barbara Stuart, School of Chemistry and Forensic Science/Centre for Forensic Science, University of Technology, Sydney; Dr Petronella Nel, Lecturer, CCMC; Dr Ljiljana Puskar, Scientist-Infrared microspectroscopy, Australian Synchrotron; Associate Professor Robyn Sloggett, CCMC
