The State Library of Victoria invites applications from Australian writers, academics, artist, composers and researchers for the 2011-12 Creative Fellowships.

The State Library of Victoria offers several Creative Fellowships annually to artists and scholars who propose thoughtful and innovative ways to use the Library’s collection. Applicants may be individuals or be working in collaborative partnerships. They may include artists practising in any art form (such as the visual arts, new media, dance, musical performance or composition), and writers and scholars in any discipline or subject.

The 2010-11 Creative Fellowships are for periods of three, six months and 12 months. Grants range from $12,500 for three months to $50,000 for 12 months. Research projects can be in any area of the Library’s collections and are open to all Australian residents.

‘The Creative Fellowships represent the State Library of Victoria’s strong commitment to original scholarship, writing and creative endeavour. They demonstrate our role in nurturing the exploration of ideas and enabling invigorating public debate,’ said Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian.

The Fellowships are funded by the State Library of Victoria Foundation and awarded annually by the State Library on the advice of an independent expert committee of the Library Board of Victoria. This is the eighth year the State Library of Victoria has offered the Fellowships.

The Redmond Barry Fellowship

Jointly sponsored by the University of Melbourne and the State Library of Victoria this fellowship is named in honour of Sir Redmond Barry (1813-80), a founder of both these institutions. The Fellowship, worth up to $20,000 and including a residency of three to six months, is awarded to scholars and writers to facilitate research and the, production of works of literature that utilise the collections of the Library and the University of Melbourne. The Fellowship is open to Australian and overseas scholars and writers.

Applicants are encouraged to attend a general information evening to discuss proposals before they are submitted. This will be held at 6pm, Monday 21 February in the Village Roadshow Theatrette, Entry 3, La Trobe Street, Melbourne.

Applications for the Creative Fellowships close on Friday 25 March and the closing date for Redmond Barry Fellowship submissions is Friday 29 April.
