Symposium

The Naked Face: self-portraits: Art, emotion, identity

Derwent Lees Australia 1884–1931, lived in England 1908–31 Self-portrait (1910s) red chalk 29.1 x 22.8 cm Felton Bequest, 1947 (1802-4)

What can self-portraits tell us about the human mind, body and identity? One of the liveliest current debates concerns the nature of human consciousness. How do we acquire and maintain individual identity? How is art subject to memory, emotion, historical and cultural circumstance? Does art expand the mind and can our neurological structures change? Join philosophers, critics and artists to discuss the creative process.
