Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation Traveling Fellowship Program

The purpose of the Traveling Fellowship is to enable students in graduate degree programs in the history of art, architecture and the decorative arts to travel to England to pursue research projects related to any aspect of the work of Sir John Soane or Sir John Soane’s Museum and its collections. These include Egyptian antiquities, classical antiquities, casts (in general), sculpture galleries, the history of museums, authentic restoration, architecture and architectural drawings c. 1650-1850, architectural models, architectural theory c. 1650-1850, neoclassical sculpture, the Grand Tour (in general), Hogarth, George Dance Junior, Joseph Michael Gandy, Sir William Chambers, Sir Christopher Wren and Hawksmoor, architecture and decoration, Robert and James Adam and English Regency painting. Annually, the Foundation entertains and reviews grant proposals with the possibility of making an award of $5,000 to a qualified candidate. Recipients are selected by Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation Fellowship Advisory Committee.

Background: The Traveling Fellowship was established to support research in art, architecture and the decorative arts, in the Soanean tradition, in accordance with Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation’s mission to foster the knowledge and appreciation of art and architecture in the United States and abroad.

Eligibility: In order to be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in the history of art, architecture, the decorative arts, interior design or in a field appropriate to the Foundation’s purpose.

Criteria for Selection:

• Completion of the program Application which is available on the website.
• Three letters of recommendation.
• Submission of proof of enrollment in a qualified academic program.

Award Conditions

• The award provides a payment to the award recipient just prior beginning of the work and research period of the project and is to include any related travel expenses and housing for the period work is undertaken.
• At the end of the research project the award recipient must submit a report on the results of the project. The report may be in the form of a written paper or a sketch book.
• The recipient may be called upon by Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation to deliver a talk or paper, at a mutually agreeable time and venue, on a topic related to Sir John Soane, or Sir John Soane’s Museum and its collection.
