Call for Papers - Emotions in the Medieval and Early Modern World

8-11 June, 2011, The University of Western Australia, Perth

Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, University of Western Australia Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Perth Medieval and Renaissance Group.

This conference will explore the subject of emotions in the medieval and early modern world, c.500-1800, across a range of disciplines. Within the field, paper proposals from any relevant areas of study are welcome.

Possible approaches and themes may include: the theory of pre-modern emotions; emotions in social and political history; religion and emotion; representations in literature, theatre and the arts; scientific, philosophical and theological understandings; the public performance of emotion; gender and emotion; emotion and the body; policing and punishing emotion; disordered emotions, and other related themes.

Abstracts of c. 300 words for 20 minute papers are now being called for from interested participants.

Submissions of 3 x 20 minute paper panel proposals are also welcome. Please supply abstracts, names of contributors, and contact details.

Collaborative research papers and presentation styles ­ including circulated papers with respondents, workshops, and round tables ­ are encouraged.

The Conference will be preceded by a reception for participants and a public lecture with Professor Peter Stearns on the evening of Wednesday June 8th 2011.

Select refereed volumes of essays based on the work of contributors to the conference are planned.

Some assistance with expenses in attending the conference may be available to postgraduates and unwaged scholars.
